Literaturpreis ehrt Werke zu arabischen Kulturen in nicht-arabischsprachigen Ländern

Der Sheikh Zayed Book Award, einer der weltweit anerkanntesten und höchst dotierten Literaturpreise, hat die Einführung einer neuen Kategorie bekanntgegeben. Diese soll die besten literarischen Werke aus nicht-arabischsprachigen Ländern über die arabische Zivilisation und Kultur ehren. Die Kategorie mit dem Namen "Sheikh Zayed Award for Arabic Culture in non-Arabic languages" ist dotiert mit einem Preisgeld von 750.000,- AED (= United Arab Emirates Dirham = 155.000,- Euro) und ehrt Werke in englischer, deutscher sowie chinesischer Sprache zum Thema arabische Zivilisation und Kultur. Berücksichtigt werden dabei sowohl Romane, Kurzgeschichten, Lyrik und Biographien als auch Werke aus den Bereichen Kunst und Geschichte.

Die Einführung dieser zusätzlichen Kategorie läuft parallel mit der Bewerbungsphase für die Nominierung für die siebte Vergabe dieses Literaturpreises für 2012/2013.  Die Bewerbungsfrist für Nominierungen von Autoren, Übersetzern und Verlagen - einschließlich der neuen Kategorie - läuft bis zum 30. September 2012.

Seit der Ernennung eines neuen Kuratoriums und Beratungsausschusses wurden für den Sheikh Zayed Book Award, der in Abu Dhabi vergeben wird, eine Reihe von Veränderungen und Verbesserungen geplant und umgesetzt. Diese betreffen sowohl die Struktur als auch die einzelnen Kategorien des Literaturpreises. So soll die wachsende Anerkennung dieses Preises, die er sich in den letzten Jahren seit seiner Einführung erworben hat, noch erhöht werden. Allein im letzten Jahr waren insgesamt 560 Autoren, Übersetzer und Verlage aus über 25 Ländern nominiert, die allesamt hofften, einen der herausragenden Preise innerhalb der neun verschiedenen Kategorien zu gewinnen, die sich auf einen Gesamtwert von über 1.550.000,- Euro belaufen.

In den letzten sechs Jahren zeichnete der Sheikh Zayed Book Award die literarischen und kulturellen Leistungen von über 40 Autoren und Institutionen aus, darunter die Organisation der Vereinten Nationen für Erziehung, Wissenschaft und Kultur - UNESCO, Brill Verlagshaus Holland, der Romanschriftsteller Wacini Laredj aus Frankreich, der spanische Gelehrte Pedro Montavez, der libysche Schriftsteller Ibrahim al-Kouni sowie der chinesische Orientalist Xhong Jikun.

Zusätzlich zu der Einführung der neuen Kategorie, ist es nun auch Verlagen und Verlegern möglich, in der Kategorie "Publishing and Cultural Technologies" (Verlagswesen und kulturelle Technologien) nominiert zu werden. Diese ehrt Verlagshäuser, die sich der arabischen Kultur und Geschichte widmen.

Ali Bin Tamim, Generalsekretär des Sheikh Zayed Book Award, gab außerdem bekannt, dass eintausend Kopien eines jeden ausgezeichneten Werks der jeweiligen Kategorie erworben werden. Diese Initiative soll Verleger und Händler auf arabischer und internationaler Ebene unterstützen und stärken.

New category accepts literary works in English, German and Chinese

The Sheikh Zayed Book Award has announced accepting nominations for its seventh cycle of 2012/2013 until September 30, 2012.

Parallel to nominations opening, Dr. Ali Bin Tamim, The Secretary General of Sheikh Zayed Book Award, revealed a number of amendments and upgrades introduced to the Award categories. Two of the award categories; "Best Technology in the Field of Culture" and "Publishing and Distribution" have been merged to form a new category entitled "Publishing and Cultural Technologies". The new category will recognize publishers, distributors and projects of cultural production, whether in print, electronic, or audio-visual format. Dr. Bin Tamim also announced a new initiative under which the Sheikh Zayed Book Award will purchase a thousand copies of any winning book in each category. This initiative, approved by the Award’s Board of Trustees last March, aims at supporting publishers and distributors and encouraging creative individuals to nominate their works in the Award’s diverse categories.

Dr. Bin Tamim explained that the merge of the two prizes will not affect the total number of categories, with the introduction of "Arabic Culture in Other Languages"; a new category devised to honor all written works in non-Arab languages about the Arabic civilization and culture. The Award will accept literary works in English, German and Chinese for the seventh session, while English will be the standard language of works accepted for forthcoming sessions.

Meanwhile, two other categories were redefined; "Fine Arts" award has been expanded to include "Literary and Art Criticism", which will comprise of studies and analytical works in theatre, poetry, narratives, history of literature and literary theories, in addition to books in various forms of art such as music, cinema, architecture, plastic art, calligraphy, painting, sculpture, photography and digital arts". The "Literature" Award, on the other hand, will now represent works across various categories of literature including poetry, creative narratives, short stories, biographies, travel, plays and creative literary works.

Mr. Abdullah Majid, Sheikh Zayed Book Award’s General Manager, on the other hand elaborated on the nominations process and the general terms applicable. For cultural personality of the year award, applicants should be nominated by academic, research and cultural institutions, by literary associations and universities or by three intellectually and culturally prominent figures. For the other eight categories, applicants are requested to fill in the Nomination Form in person.

Applicants must collect their application from the Administrative Offices of the Award or they can download it online from the Award's website www.zayedaward.ae. Once completed and signed, the application forms should be submitted to the Sheikh Zayed Book Award Offices along with the Candidate's Resume, Passport copy, Personal photo, and five copies of the nominated work in a book format - works nominated for the Award of “Publishing and Cultural Technologies” can be in digital format.

Mr. Majid detailed that all nominated works must have been published in the last two years and shouldn’t be previously awarded by an international/ prominent Prize. The work must be written in Arabic, except for works nominated for the Translation Award (they could be translated either from or to Arabic), and the works nominated for the newly devised category for "Arabic Culture in Other Languages" which can be in English, German or Chinese for the seventh session.

Last March has marked the conclusion of Sheikh Zayed Book Award’s sixth session, through which a total of 560 nominations from over 25 countries worldwide were filtered against stringent, quantifiable scoring criteria to name winners in seven distinct categories, while two other categories were withheld. The "Cultural Personality of the Year" Award has been granted to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization - UNESCO. The sixth session also marked the first time in the history of Sheikh Zayed Book Award to present the "Best Technology in the Field of Culture" prize, which has been awarded to Paju Bookcity. The rest of the winners counted:

"Young Author" - Layla Al Obaidi from Tunisia for her book "Humor in Islam"
"Children’s Literature" - Abdo Wazen from Lebanon for his novel "The Boy Who Saw the Color of Air"
"Fine Arts" - Dr. Shaker Abdel-Hamid from Egypt for his book "Art and Eccentrics"
"Translation" - Abu Yarub Al Marzouqi from Tunisia for his book "A Prelude to Phenomenology and Phenomenological Philosophy" translated from of the work of Edmund Horsel in German
"Publishing & Distrbution" - the renowned "Brill" Publishing House

Meanwhile, Awards for "Best Contribution to the Development of the Country" and "Literature" were withheld.

The award is independent and neutral, it is presented every year to outstanding Arab writers, intellectuals, publishers as well as young talent whose writings and translations of humanities have scholarly and objectively enriched Arab cultural, literary and social life.

The award established under the patronage and support of Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture& Heritage. The award is supervised by a Higher Committee that sets the general policies and a Consultative Council to follow-up on its operational mechanisms. The value of the award totals AED 7 million (= 1.472.341,63 Euro).
